One of the great things about the modern world is that technological advances have made it possible for many jobs to become remote. Instead of having to commute to and from an office, you can do your work from anywhere that has a stable internet connection. And, of course, for many RVers, that means working from their campers as they travel around the country. Jobs that can be performed remotely include tech support, web design, accounting, customer service, tutoring, photography, coding or programming, graphic design, writing, editing, and so many more.
If you’re able to find a remote job that allows you to live and work from your RV full-time, then you have a lot more freedom about when and where you can travel. However, there are some things you’ll need to be mindful of in order to ensure your employment’s success.
Prioritizing Internet Connectivity
As noted above, these remote jobs simply can’t be performed without easy and reliable access to the internet. While many RV campgrounds do provide some form of free WiFi, this internet is not dependable enough for a full-time job. You’ll have to make sure that your camper has a reliable internet connection, either in the form of a mobile hotspot on your data plan, or by using signal-boosting devices to make existing WiFi options work better.
Make Your Workspace Ergonomic
Working from a computer for hours at a time can cause repetitive stress injuries, strain, and joint pain if you don’t set up a sufficiently ergonomic workspace. Your workspace should also be free of distractions and as quiet as possible, which can be something of a challenge in an RV. You may also find yourself working at local cafes or coffee shops at times, which is okay, but it’s still nice to have a dedicated workspace in the camper.
You’ll need a desk, a chair, a lamp, and space for your computer, monitor, speakers, printer, and any other tools that you use on a regular basis. Try to find a spot in your camper that’s out of the way.
Stick to a Schedule
While working remotely does offer you the freedom to travel in your RV and do other things, you should still try to set up some kind of schedule, particularly if your work isn’t bound by standard office hours (for example, if you’re a freelancer). Set up a schedule so that you’re waking up at the same time each day and getting into a regular routine with your work, with meal and rest breaks scheduled in as well. Try not to allow yourself to be on-call when you’ve completed your work for the day so that your work life doesn’t eat into your home life.
